Dark Clouds/Silver Lining ???
There might be an up side if you can imagine such a thing) to the current gloomy political future.
There is little doubt that the US (and world) is in a recession. Only a miracle will prevent a depression and I don't believe any action by the US, foreign countries or potential leaders will make one iotaof difference, other than to stuff more dollars into undeserving pockets and put taxpayers farther into long-term debt.
But here's the up side. What will be thought of those in charge when all the crap hits the fan and those campaign promises fall far short?
Would you want to be the President when the economy tanks? Would you wish that fate on your friends? How about your enemies?
Oil today was listed at $69 per barrel, quite a drop from it's previous high.
Can anyone guess where it will all end? The stock market has been like a yo-yo recently.
I pulled up information http://www.gold-eagle.com/editorials_08/lundeen101308.html that compared the stock market losses above 40 percent. While the market, which reflects the overall financial condition of the United States and the world, has seen 9 such drops in the last 122 years, the numbers are very similar to the Depression statistics.
Simply put, it appears that we have not seen the bottom and that much stock value growth has been based on inflated numbers. The parallels between the Depression markets direction and todays market is disconcerting.
Certainly greed from all involved has driven the markets to their present status. The silly bureaucrats who understand the problems even less than most, keep telling investors that the problems are all imaginary. Who would have envisioned the US pumping BILLIONS into poorly run financial institutions?
And on this eve of a presidential election, where the leading candidate is proposing even more social programs, people are swallowing the BS as they hold their hands out, expecting mother government to save them from themselves.
Supposing that the outcome is as predicted, who do you think will be hurt more by higher taxes on the "wealthy"? If national health care is implemented, what effect will that have on medical treatment in the US? Can you envision being denied treatment because you are too old or don't "fit" the prescribed definitions?
Does anyone think for a moment that our enemies aren't watching this contest intently? How will Iran, North Korea, Russia, China or Brazil test our new leaders resolve?
Some scary thoughts, huh?
