So what if they can't read, write or add?

The illustrious Washington County Board of Education (BOE) laid it's budget out the other day, a whopping 226.9 million bucks! To put it in more understandable terms that's about $10,800 per student.

And the most alarming issue was that they wanted to increase spending on sports!

Are these people so far out of touch with reality that they spout such stupid ideas?

Steve Hummel - "We compel (County Commissioners) to completely fund the ..... budget request."  What planet is Mr. Hummel from that he supports an unquestioned BOE budget?

Rick Hill - "We should waive the admission fee for kids."  Another stupid idea that will stick the taxpayers for more money.   (Of course Mr. Hill was part of the Mike Callas Stadium boondoggle - you know the stadium that was gonna be built with private donations?  Right, and taxpayers will be paying for that exercise - FOREVER!)

It doesn't seem to matter that schools were founded and their original goal was to educate students.  Does the BOE understand why colleges have the 100 series classes?  It is to teach students things that should be learned in public schools!

But we have zero tolerance - expelling children for drawing pictures that someone considers inappropriate.

We have a school nursing program that costs 4 million bucks every year.

We agonize over bullying, a problem that begins and ends at home, and that the BOE will never, ever solve!

We can't transport children reliably to their destination without hiding the problem under a "personnel" umbrella.

We have new schools that can't be filled but need money for principals, an office staff, cafeteria and maintenance.

We spend an unaccountable amount of money so kids can play, but if they can't read, write, add, subtract, understand American or world history, have basic life skills ...., well that's OK because Washington County has a WORLD CLASS PUBLIC EDUCATION!

Given the choice of whether to laugh or cry, I think I'll cry.

Texas Longhorns

  • Maya
Texas Longhorn Cattle. Building a great herd takes years of management, careful breeding and work. Our herd exhibits the more traditional "bicycle" shaped horns. Another quality we propagate is gentleness. A longhorn can be testy. Obviously with their equipment, a cow or bull that isn't gentle must not extend that unwanted quality to offspring. Our bulls, cows and steers are all capable of being handled with just reasonable caution. Another attribute is their hardiness and gentle birthing. Meat quality at 24 months is unsurpassed. So if you are passing by, stop and visit. The herd loves the attention (and we enjoy the company).
